adhesives

2-part epoxy technology

2part DIRECT BONDING ADHESIVE for use in place of welding an areas such as rear quater and roof panels on modern motor vehicles. No special gun required as this will fit a standard mastic / caulking gun. Whenever high heat resistance or adhesion to bare metal is required, Pliogrip™ epoxy adhesives are the technology of choice.Ashland’s epoxy adhesives are engineered to meet specific high-heat and design requirements for the structural assembly of composite or metal substrates. The unique adhesive technology can provide durable bonds on composite and metal lift gates, tailgates, hoods, body panels and other automotive and industrial parts. These adhesives are two-part, 100% solids, reactive epoxy chemistries with excellent chemical and moisture resistance when cured. Our epoxy adhesives exhibit high modulus strength, excellent fatigue performance and superior impact strength. All products have been designed to offer high productivity and short cycle times

SPOT WELDING OF PLIOGRIP EPOXY

The Pliogrip Epoxies have

excellent spot-welding properties,

either wet or cured.

Upon spot-welding of the wet

adhesive, the adhesive moves

away from the weld area.

However, in contrast to

competitive materials, after spotwelding,

upon cooling, the

Pliogrip epoxy flows back around

the weld area and cures, thereby

sealing the area and preventing

moisture from getting into the

weld area.

Obviously, the more the adhesive

is cured, the more limited the flow

away and back to the weld area

is. Therefore, spot-welding of the

cured adhesive results in an area

where the epoxy is damaged

(probably burned due to

temperatures of over 1200 °C

during spot-welding). Therefore,

upon welding of the cured

adhesive, it’s important that the

width of the bondline is sufficient

to ensure that an intact adhesive

layer remains present around the

welded area to prevent moisture

migration and therefore corrosion

on the long term.
